MANILA, Philippines — Up to 1,245 people with suspected involvement in online sabong or cockfighting were arrested under the administration of President Marcos, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported yesterday.
PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. commended police operatives who were responsible for the law enforcement operations against e-sabong operators and players.
“The extensive crackdown on e-sabong illegal gambling underscores our unwavering commitment to the rule of law,” he said in a statement.
Data from the PNP’s crime incident reporting and analysis system showed the suspects were apprehended in law enforcement operations nationwide from July 1, 2022 to Aug. 15.
Of the suspects, 322 were convicted while the rest are undergoing trial in courts or the complaints against them were referred to prosecutors for legal action.
A majority of the suspects were from Central Visayas with 348, followed by 328 in Central Luzon.
Acorda vowed that the PNP will continue the crackdown on e-sabong, which was declared illegal by former president Rodrigo Duterte.
